Jan. 13, 2003 11/30/2002 - "FIGHTING HAWKS FLAMED IN HOME OPENER" PRINCESS ANNE, MD- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Fighting Hawks (0-2, 0-0 MEAC) hoped to get that illustrious first win of the season tonight against the Elon University Phoenix (2-1). The Phoenix breathed a little too much fire as UMES was up ended in their home opener by a 68-64 score. Tee Trotter could hardly miss tonight going 12-14 from the field and a perfect 3-3 from the line. He connected on 5-6 shooting from behind the arc and led all scorers with 32 points. While Tee was keeping the Hawks in the game others could not it going offensively. Freshman Aaron Wellington was the only other Hawk in double figures with ten. Didier Socka led the Hawks in rebounding with four while four others had three each. The Hawks took a one point lead into the locker room at the half but could never put away Elon who hit big shots to keep it close. Scottie Rice shot 4-5 from behind the arc and 5-9 overall to record a team high 14 points. Shamar Johnson got a double double for Elon with ten points and ten rebounds. Quinton McCleod also had ten points. The Hawks took care of the ball, turning it over only nine times and forcing 14. They even out rebounded the Phoenix by a 29-24 margin. "We did everything right but score," said Head Coach Thomas Trotter. "It was the same thing in Northwestern, we do the little things, take care of the ball, rebound, but don't put the ball in the basket."
UMES had better learn to score quick as they leave Monday for a Tuesday night game in Las Cruces, New Mexico. It is a homecoming for Tee Trotter who played his high school ball in the area and for Coach Trotter who spent three seasons under Head Coach Lou Henson of New Mexico State. UMES takes on the Aggies at 7:05 PM.
