Jan. 13, 2003 12/07/2002 - "UMES SLASHED BY VIKINGS" CLEVELAND, OH- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Fighting Hawks (0-4, 0-0 MEAC) came Cleveland State University (4-3, 0-0 Horizon) tonight hoping for that illustrious first win. They came up short allowing to Viking players to record career highs.
Junior Tee Trotter led all scorers with 31 points, including a 9-11 three-point shooting performance, tying a Goodman Arena record. Overall, he shot 10-18 and two for two from the line. The story of the game was foul trouble as junior Terrance Stafford was forced to sit down early with three personals. The third foul came on a controversial call where the foul should have been charged to another player. He had to sit with ten points, including two three-pointers. He returned late in the first-half only to pick up his fourth. He finished with 12 points.
The Hawks only lead came at the 18:22 mark of the first half when Stafford knocked down a three to take a 3-2 lead. The Hawks kept the Vikings' lead close until the 4:24 mark when they took a 32-21 lead on foul shots by Modibo Niakate. CSU would go on to rattle off a 10-6 run that would leave the Hawks down by 15 at the break.
UMES would make a come back in the second half at the 8:37 mark cutting it to ten (54-44) on a lay-up by Ali Trotman. It was a1l CSU after that. They would stretch the lead out to 20 at the 3:11 mark with a 70-50 margin. After a technical foul was charged to the UMES bench CSU would see Niakate drop down his 20th point on free-throws tying a career high.
Tahric Gosley scored a career high with 23 points, 20 in the first-half. Niakate and Andre Williams would grab nine boards each to lead the Vikings. Javes Wiggins would lead all rebounders with ten for UMES. The Hawks were out-rebounded 40-28 and turned the ball over 15 times, the same as CSU.
The Hawks head back to Maryland to battle in-state rival Towson University Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Towson.
