Jan. 13, 2003 "TIGERS TOPPLE HAWKS" TOWSON, MD- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Fighting Hawks (0-5, 0-0 MEAC) came to Towson University (2-3, 0-0 Colonial) tonight hoping for that illustrious first win. They came up short allowing the Tigers to build on a two point half-time lead to win 65-40.
Tee Trotter led the Hawks with 13 points while Aaron Wellington added seven. Javes Wiggins led the Hawks with seven rebounds.
UMES kept the first-half close despite 11 turnovers. They kept it close by out rebounding the Tigers and making seven steals. Towson shot 54.5 % in the first-half and led 29-27. In the second half Towson blew it open building on their lead up to 28 points with 36 seconds left. A three-pointer by Jermaul Akanbi with five seconds left made the margin stand at 25.
Towson dominated the second half out scoring the Hawks by eight in the paint, by five off of turnovers, and by six points on fast breaks. UMES did out score Towson six to two points on second-chances.
The Tigers were looking for revenge from last year's defeat in Princess Anne, MD when Tee Trotter scored 36 points. Towson knew to keep it close this season they had to shut him down. Brian Allen did just that holding Trotter to 4-13 shooting.
TU was led by Jamaal Gilchrist with 18 points and Lawrence Hamm with 14. Hamm also led all Tiger rebounders with seven.
UMES hopes to change courses on Saturday, December 14 when they visit Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
