12/15/2002 - "HAWKS HAVE POSITIVE THINGS TO BUILD ON IN LOSS TO ODU"

"UMES SHOWS IMPROVEMENT IN SIXTH LOSS OF SEASON"

"HAWKS FIGHT HARD BUT STILL LOOKING FOR FIRST WIN"

NORFOLK, VA- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Fighting Hawks (0-6, 0-0 MEAC) came into Old Dominion University (2-4, 0-0 CAA) tonight trying to get a win, but left still winless on the 2002-2003 season. UMES finally scored tonight but could not stop the post players for the Monarchs.

Tee Trotter again led all scorers with 21 points. Ka'Reem Horton scored a season high 13 points while freshman Aaron Wellington added 12. Javes Wiggins led UMES in rebounding with eight.

It was a slow start overall for both teams as the score was 14-6 in favor of ODU at the 11:06 mark. ODU took over from there exploding to a 32-19 with 1:43 left in the half. After Ricardo Marsh scored two of his 16 points on a lay-up with 55 seconds left the lead was 34-21 at the break.

UMES came out strong in the second-half with strong play by Horton who sunk two free throws, made a lay-up, and got a steal for another lay-in. Wellington added two free throws and the Monarch lead was cut to 34-29 at the 18:32 mark. ODU would be forced to take a time-out to regroup, and regroup they did. March made two lay-ups and a free throw. Alex Loughton then made another lay-up followed by a Marsh lay-in and an Isaiah Hunter lay-in. After all that UMES's only offense was a three-pointer by Horton and UMES would find themselves down 45-32 with almost 14 minutes left to play.

Loughton would grab some key rebounds and make lay-ups down the stretch to finish with ten boards and 14 points. Kiah Thomas would also play well adding ten points and Rasheed Wright would drop 13 points of his own. Hunter added another 14 to make five Monarchs in double figures.

UMES did shoot well down the stretch making all 16 of their free throws in the second half to finish 17-20 from the line. They shot 35 % form behind the arc and 33.3 % from the field. ODU shot a blistering 50 % from the field but only 25 % from the arc and 23-30 from the line. The Monarchs out-rebounded the Hawks 45-27 but committed one more turnover with a total of 14.

After seeing some positive things Coach Trotter was hopeful, but still upset with the general effort. "We finally had some guys score tonight, but couldn't play defense in the post. When we had the lead cut some guys allowed lay-ups that put them back in control. We can't win allowing them to shoot fifty-percent, which is too many easy buckets."

The Hawks hope to combine the defense and the offense to grab their first win on December 18th when they host Robert Morris University at 7:30 p.m. in the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
