01/06/2003 - "HAWKS LOOK TO REGROUP AFTER LOSS TO NSU"

PRINCESS ANNE, MD- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Fighting Hawks (0-11, 0-2 MEAC) "were just tired tonight," said Head Coach Thomas Trotter. The Hawks showed little energy after an almost upset of Hampton just two days ago. "We struggled to find out shot and our defense tonight," he added. "Our best player only took six shots, we didn't even practice all of our guys [because of fatigue], it is tough coming off a Saturday game, and Norfolk didn't play on Saturday like we did."

The Hawks nonetheless played hard getting a game high 15 points from freshman Aaron Wellington and ten from Tee Trotter. Ali Trotman had his third ten-rebound performance in a row to lead everyone in that category.

A lay-up by Trotman gave the Hawks the early 2-0 lead but after a Derick smith jumper the Hawks had to battle to get it back. Aaron Wellington made alay-up and they were again in control. The Spartans took the lead on a steal and dunk by Chakowby Hicks and they would run their lead out to 11. Wellington would cut it to nine on a runner in the lane and then Trotter would knock down a three to get it to six. The Hawks would have it to four at the 5:34 mark on another Wellington bucket but lay-ups by Norfolk's Daryl Towe and Hiraman Byrd would send it back to eight. Wellington would do his best to keep it close with a three-pointer that quickly cut the lead to five. There was under four minutes left but NSU would run the lead to 12 after three-pointers by Smith and Nicholas Byrd and a lay-in by Ricky Woods. The Hawks would go in down 12 at the half.

UMES would trim it to nine by the 16:41 mark of the second-half but would get no closer. The Spartans had the led to as many as 25 with 7:10 left when Thomas Aladi would make one of two from the line. Derrick Smith would get nine of his team high 14 points in the second-half and UMES would all by a 78-51 margin.

Ryan Grier would lead the Spartans in rebounds with ten while five players were in double figures. Grier was one with 11 points to record a double double. Hicks, and woods each recorded 13 while Towe had 12.

UMES is trying to regroup and compete in the MEAC with trips to Florida A & M on Saturday and Bethune Cookman on Monday. They will play at home again on the 18th when they host North Carolina A & T at 2:00 PM. That is also Take A Kid To The Game Day.
