01/07/2003 - "WELLINGTON NAMED MEAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK"

GREENSBORO, NC- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore's (UMES) Freshman Sensation, Aaron Wellington has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's Rookie of the Week for the week ending January 5, 2002.

Wellington, a 5'11" guard from Chicago, IL, was one of the Hawk's top recruits in the off-season and is now showing why he was so highly touted. He played his high school ball at De La Salle High School.

In the Hawk's two games last week Wellington totaled 27 points, two rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Of those 27 points 18 came in Pittsburgh on New Year's Eve when the Hawks fell to Atlantic-10 power Duquesne in overtime. Because of Wellington's four for eight shooting behind the arc the Hawks led all but six minutes of regulation. He even scored nine points in the Hawks near upset of MEAC Champion Hampton on Saturday.

"Aaron is the type of player that can take over a game," said Head Coach Thomas Trotter, "he can get open and make critical shots, just like he did against Duquesne." "We didn't think he would have to start for us this quickly, but he has taken the role and shined in it." Wellington has started nine of the Hawk's eleven games this season.

The Hawk's will take Aaron's momentum into a match-up with Florida A & M University Saturday in Tallahassee, FL.
