PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team is proudly hosting Coaches vs. Cancer and their Suits and Sneakers weekend on Saturday with a 4 p.m. matchup against Howard at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center. Coaches vs. Cancer is a joint effort by the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers basketball coaches, schools and communities nationwide to help fight cancer. Head coach Frankie Allen and his staff, along with Howard head coach Gil Jackson and his staff, will be participating on Saturday in the annual Suits and Sneakers Weekend, where thousands of coaches nationwide wear sneakers with their suits instead of their regular dress shoes. Wearing sneakers is a simple way to show support for the American Cancer Society and reminds people that they can do a lot to reduce their risk of cancer, including eating right, exercising, making healthy lifestyle choices and following recommended cancer screening guidelines. "Cancer affects everybody in some way - my father died at a young age (59) from lung cancer and my mother-in-law was taken from us with breast cancer a few years ago," said Allen. "What we do as coaches is not just on the court, but off-court as well. Being involved with initiatives such as Coaches vs. Cancer is truly one of the most satisfying things I do as we all come together, support research and find a cure." The Hawks are currently 5-14 on the season, 3-3 at home and 3-3 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. UMES recently split games in Baltimore, winning, 72-60, at Coppin State on Saturday and losing, 91-54, at Morgan State on Monday. Senior Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) registered double-doubles in both game with 17 points and 10 rebounds against the Eagles and 14 points and 12 rebounds against the Bears. The Bison are coming off of a 67-64 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Monday to move to 6-15 overall and 5-2 in the MEAC. Dadrian Collins led Howard with 18 points. Calvin Thompson is the team's leading scorer with an average of 13.7 points per game while Mike Philips averages 5.4 rebounds per contest.
