NORFOLK, VA-The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (3-18, 3-9 MEAC) were hoping to revenge an earlier season loss to the Norfolk State University Spartans (10-10, 7-4 MEAC) but were unable to pull off the comeback late in the gme and would up on the losing end by a 63-80 margin.
Norfolk State jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead but UEMS came thundering back on a three-pointer by Tee Trotter and two three-pointers by Brent Campbell to even the score. Javes Wiggins gave the Hawks their first lead on a hook shot but Chakowby Hicks scored two of his career high 24 points to tie the game at 11. The hawks would lead until the 3:57 mark. UMES got buckets from Trotter, Aaron Wellington, Ka'Reem Horton, and Wiggins to keep them in front of the Spartans. Hicks would tie it up again form NSU at the 3:37 mark. From there it was all Spartans to finish the half. Hicks hit a jumper, Ryan Grier made a lay-in and converted the and one situation. UMES knocked it back down to a two-point lead on a Trotter jumper but Grier converted two more lay-ups and another free throw to give Norfolk State a 36-30 lead.
The Spartans came out firing in the second half but UMES had an answer. After NSU took a ten-point lead the Hawks cut it to five on a three-pointer and a runner by Trotter. Norfolk State then put a run together extending their lead to as many as 14 over the next ten minutes. The Hawks kept battling getting the lead down to eight with two minutes to play behind the spirited guard play of Wellington, Campbell, Horton and Trotter. The Hawks got a few steals and lay-in to cut the lead but then was forced to foul which extended the NSU lead. When the final horn sounded Norfolk State escaped wit an 80-63 win.
Trotter led UMES with 26 points, Wellington had 13 and Horton added 10. Wiggins led all rebounders with eight. Norfolk State was led by Hicks with 23, Daryl Towe with 18 points, Derrick Smith with 14 and Grier with 12 points.
UMES now regroups and prepares to play the Rattlers of Florida A & M University on Saturday during the Hawk's Homecoming.
