March 5, 2004 The Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team will be the #9 seed in next week's MEAC Tournament in Richmond, VA, and will take on #8 Bethune-Cookman in a first-round match-up Tuesday at approximately 1:30 p.m. The UMES women's team received the help they were looking for Saturday to move up to the #7 seed, and will play #10 North Carolina A&T Monday at approximately 1:30 p.m. The Hawk men (7-20, 6-12 MEAC) lost to Bethune 71-70 in double-overtime at the Hytche Center on February 2nd in the only regular season meeting between the teams. The game will be played at the Arthur Ashe Center following the conclusion of the #8-#9 women's game that begins at 11:00 a.m. The Lady Hawks (11-16, 6-12 MEAC) did not know their seeding until Saturday night, after the conclusion of the Norfolk State-Hampton and South Carolina State-N.C. A&T games. Both Norfolk State (6-12 MEAC) and South Carolina State (6-12 MEAC) lost, creating a three-way tie for seventh-place including UMES. The Lady Hawks thus became the seventh seed by virtue of having a better overall record than the other teams involved (#7 UMES 11-16, #8 S.C. St. 9-18, #9 Norfolk St. 7-20).
All of the UMES MEAC tournament games, both men's and women's, will be broadcast live on Sportstalk 960 AM, with Josh Maurer calling the action. The games can also be heard on-line thanks to Broadcastmonsters.com.
