The UMES basketball teams' match-ups for the 2005 MEAC Tournament in Richmond were set this weekend, as the fifth-seeded Lady Hawks earned a first-round bye while the eleventh-seeded men's team will play a rematch from their regular-season finale against #6 Morgan State. The men's game will be played Monday at the Arthur Ashe Center at 3:00 pm, while the women are idle until Thursday when they take on #4 Howard at noon.

Fred Batchelor's Lady Hawks (12-15, 10-8 MEAC), who earned the team's first winning conference record since '97-'98, were granted the #5 seed thanks to Hampton's victory over Norfolk State Friday night. Had the Lady Spartans won, they would have finished fifth and pushed UMES into the #6 seed. However, the NSU loss dropped them into a three-way tie for sixth place with Florida A&M and North Carolina A&T, and the Lady Spartans fell to the #8 seed due to the tiebreaking procedure.

The UMES men (2-25, 1-17 MEAC), who had previously clinched the #11 seed in the MEAC Tournament, found out they would play Morgan State Saturday night following South Carolina State's eight-point win at N.C. A&T. Even though Morgan later upset Coppin State and dropped the Eagles from first place to third place, the Bulldogs held a three-way tiebreaker over MSU and Norfolk State, giving them the #4 seed, the Spartans the #5 seed and leaving the Bears at #6.

The Hawks lost to Morgan State 94-68 last Tuesday in their regular-season finale in Baltimore, which completed a season sweep by the Bears over UMES. The Lady Hawks were also swept in the regular season by Howard, falling by 16 at home and by 26 on the road to the Lady Bison.
