The Men's Game
The #9 UMES men's basketball team begins conference tournament play with a match-up against #8 Bethune-Cookman Tuesday at the Arthur Ashe Center. The Hawks (7-20, 6-12 MEAC) lost their final four regular season games following a prolonged hot streak in which they had won six out of nine contests.

The Hawks ended the regular season with a 93-89 loss at Morgan State on March 1st, falling despite a 65-point second half outburst (28 from senior Tee Trotter). Trotter, who had missed the previous game with a knee injury, ended with a game-high 35 points and finished second in the conference with 18.9 ppg.

Scouting the Wildcats
The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats (8-20, 7-11 MEAC) enter the conference tournament on a roll, having won their final two regular-season games to clinch eighth place in the season standings.

After starting this season 0-10, the Wildcats played almost .500 ball the final two months of the season, including victories in four of their final seven MEAC games.

Bethune last played Friday night against Florida A&M in its regular-season finale and upset the Rattlers 85-83 in overtime, thanks to a career-high 25 points from Diondre Larmond. The team is led by first-team MEAC pre-season selection Pape Ba, a center who averages 10.0 ppg and a team-leading 5.4 rpg. Forward Larmond is Bethune's leading scorer and only other player averaging double-figures at 10.6 ppg.

News and Notes
Tee Trotter, who was named a second-team All-MEAC selection, has now scored 1,875 points in his career at UMES, and on Feb. 21st passed Levi Fountaine (1,816) for second-place on the school's all-time scoring list. On Feb. 12th, he passed Ken Simmons (1,748) to become the school's all-time Division-I scoring leader...On Feb. 17th, Trotter was named MEAC Player of the Week by the conference for the third week in a row. The senior is now averaging 18.9 ppg this season, which is second in the MEAC to FAMU's Terrence Woods (20.4). Tee finished second in the conference in scoring last season (20.5 ppg)...It took UMES 22 games this season to better its win total from all of '02-'03 (7-20 now, 5-23 overall last season). Last year UMES tied for 9th place in the MEAC, while this year they finished alone in 9th...The Hawks have struggled from the field so far this season, coming into play Tuesday shooting only 38% as a team...The Hawks have two family connections between players and coaches. Tee Trotter is head coach Thomas Trotter's son, while center Tim Parham is a cousin of assistant coach Paris Parham.

When Last They Met...
Diondre Larmond hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of the first overtime, then hit the game-winning three-ball with two minutes left in the second overtime period to lift Bethune-Cookman College to a 71-70 double-OT win over UMES Monday February 2nd at the Hytche Center.

Larmond, who hit an off-balance three from the wing as time expired in the first extra period, then hit an open triple from the right corner to give BCC (4-14, 3-6 MEAC) a 71-68 advantage in the second OT. With time running down and the Hawks ((3-15, 2-8 MEAC) still down by three, Tee Trotter missed an off-balance three, but the rebound was tipped in by Didier Socka with 1.4 seconds on the clock. UMES couldn't steal the ensuing inbounds pass and the Wildcats ran out the clock.

In first overtime the two teams battled back and forth with each scoring on its first six possessions of the period, capped by a Jareem Dowling three-pointer that gave the Hawks a 63-62 lead with 31 seconds left. Then after Pape Ba missed a fadeaway jumper and Trotter made two free throws, UMES had a three-point advantage with seven seconds left. Larmond took a pass from O'Neal Carter however and drained the trifecta at the buzzer to keep the game alive and break the Hawks' hearts.
