MEAC MAKES STATEMENT ON UMES BASKETBALL PROTEST

Raleigh, N.C. - After a controversial ending to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore(UMES) Men's Basketball MEAC Tournament 73-71 loss to Norfolk State, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) released an official statement responding to a protest filed by UMES. It was released immediately following the conclusion of the last game of the night, Howard vs. North Carolina A & T. The statement was read by Michelle Jinks, Director of Media Relations for the MEAC. No questions were taken.

The statement appears below.

"MEAC Response To The Final Call During The First Round Game Between The University of Maryland Eastern Shore And Norfolk State University.

The Chair of the Games Committee, Marty Miller - Director of Atheltics at Norfolk State University, recused himself becasue his team was involved in the game under protest.

The Committee recieved the protest from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and recieved the report from the Coordinator of Officials, who revealed that the official simply missed the foul. Furthermore, after reviewing the tape it confirmed a foul on a three-point shot attempt occurrd prior to the expiration of time.

The official responsible for making the call will not officiate any further games during the remainder of the tournament."
