WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Junior forward Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) and freshman forward/center Keishawn Mayes (Warrenton, N.C.) have been named to the All-MEAC Second Team and Rookie Team, respectively, the league announced Monday at the tip-off banquet held at the M.C. Benton, Jr. Convention Center.
Pitt, a junior-college transfer, is averaging 16.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game and is in the top-10 in six statistical categories in the conference, including leading in offensive rebounding (3.3 per game).
Pitt joins guards C.J. Reed (Bethune-Cookman) and Vincent Simpson (Hampton) as well as forwards Jason Flagler (South Carolina State), Corey Lyons (Norfolk State) and Marquise Kately (Morgan State) on the Second Team.
Guards Reed, Michael Harper (Coppin State) and Jimmy Williams (South Carolina State) and forward/center Kevin Thompson (Morgan State) join Mayes as part of the rookie team.
The league also announced its individual award winners at the banquet. Morgan State head coach Todd Bozeman was tabbed Coach of the Year, while Coppin's Tywain McKee earned Player of the Year honors. Bethune's Reed was the MEAC's Rookie of the Year and South Carolina State's Jason Johnson was named Defensive Player of the Year.
The No. 11 seed, UMES (7-22, 3-13) squares off with No. 6 Bethune-Cookman in the first round the MEAC Tournament at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum Wednesday at 3 p.m.
