March 10, 2010 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Number six seed University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team tips off the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament today at 3 p.m. against number 11 Coppin State at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Hawks, who were predicted 11th to start the season, surprised the league with an 8-8 finish, their best since 2000-01 when they were 10-2 and also a six seed in the tournament. UMES fell in their last game of the season, 57-37, to Delaware State in front of a packed Memorial Hall. Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) led the Hawks in scoring with 11 points. Sophomore Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) grabbed a game-high seven rebounds, all in the first half. Haley led the team in scoring for the season with 12.0 points per game while junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) was second with 11.8. Senior Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.), despite sitting out numerous games due to injury, led UMES in rebounding with 6.2 per contest. Freshman Sean Berry (Irvington, N.J.) averaged 5.9 rebounds per game. During the regular season, the Hawks swept CSU for the first time since 2001-02. They most recently topped the Eagles on Homecoming in a 66-52 decision. CSU finished the season with a 3-13 record in MEAC play. They ended the season with a 74-54 loss to city-rival Morgan State last Thursday. Kareem Brown led the Eagles with 18 points and was 7-of-14 from the field. Michael Harper finished the season as CSU's leading scorer, averaging 10.1 points per game while Brown averaged 9.8. Sam Coleman was their leading rebounder, with 5.8 per, and Branden Doughty was second on the team with 5.2. Doughty was named to the MEAC All-Rookie team last week.
