Dec. 8, 2009

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team had an exciting weekend, beating Delaware State for the first time in five years, the women's team also beat Delaware State, but lost to Iona while the bowling team competed in the last MEAC Northern Division meet.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

It had been a long time in the making, but with a 53-50 win, the men's basketball team secured bragging rights over Rt. 13 rival Delaware State in front of 2,000-plus fans at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center Saturday night.

The Hawks and Hornets tangle regularly each season, usually twice, but DSU had been the victor in every meeting since 2004. Additionally, they hadn't lost in the Hytche since 2001.

On Saturday, head coach Frankie Allen's squad changed that.

Despite a 29.2 first half field goal percentage and trailing by seven points at the half, the Hawks defeated DSU in the MEAC season opener for both teams.

UMES had not beaten the Hornets since a 69-66 overtime victory on February 7, 2004 in Dover, Del. Since then, DSU has won 10 straight against the Hawks. Additionally, they had won seven straight games at the Hytche, losing last on January 6, 2001, 59-54.

Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) led all scorers with 14 point, going 5-for-13 from the floor, one for three from behind the arc and a perfect three for three from the free throw line. He also added four steals, two assists, one rebound and one blocked shot in 35 minutes of play.

Sophomore Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) made his first start of the season and ended the contest leading UMES with seven rebounds and adding five points in 20 minutes. Junior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was another Hawk who scored in double digits with 12. He continues to dish out assists with five on the night. With the win, UMES improves to 2-5 on the season and 1-0 in the MEAC while the Hornets fall to 4-2 (0-1 MEAC).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Three players scored in double digits, led by 25 from senior April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) as the Lady Hawks defeated Delaware State, 74-61, in the MEAC opener for both teams at the Hytche Saturday.

McBride shot 11-of-17 from the field and 3-of-3 from the foul line while grabbing eight rebounds, including six on the offensive. She also dished out a game-high-tying four assists. The win is UMES' first of the season and improves their record to 1-3 while DSU fell to 1-5.

Junior Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) added 16 points and six boards while sophomore Amber Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) chipped in with 13, four boards and two assists.

The Lady Hawks shot a season-high 52.7 percent (29-for-55) and was 56.7 percent from the floor (17-for-30) in the second half.

Iona forward Kristina Ford hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 1.7 seconds left to lift the Gaels to a 53-50 non-conference victory over the Lady Hawks Monday. They fell to 1-4 on the season with the loss.

Cook paced UMES with 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists while Morton added nine points and freshman Karona Roach (Bear, Del.) chipped in eight points, two assists and a steal.

BOWLING

Down three players heading into the final day of competition, the bowling team dropped a pair of MEAC matches. Paired with the previous day's results the Lady Hawks went 6-4 at the two-day Northern Division meet and finished as the runner-up to the MEAC North title.

While UMES started hot, topping Howard (1017-778) and Coppin State (874-767), they ran into a hot-bowling team in no. 20 Morgan State. The Lady Bears topped the Lady Hawks 1039, 970 in the third team game of the day. UMES rebounded to top Hampton 958-865 but fell in a critical match-up to no. 3 Delaware State 958-994.

That loss all but secured the MEAC Northern Division title for the Hornets, marking the first time in five seasons that UMES has not finished first or tied for first in the conference regular season. Since DSU topped the Hawks twice in the previous conference match, they would now hold a three game lead on UMES.

Individually, Kristina Frahm (Oswego, Ill.) bowled well as she posted a 201 against Howard and a 217 versus Morgan State. She was not able to bowl on Sunday due to injury. Freshman Anggie Ramirez (Bogota, Colombia) posted the high game of the day on Saturday for UMES with a 265, the highest of her young NCAA career.

While UMES once again started strong on Sunday, topping Coppin State (743-624) and Howard (7530569), they fell to Hampton in the third game of the day, 777-782. They dropped another contest to Delaware State 722-770 before finishing with a win over Morgan State 806-755.

The team was without All-American Maria Rodriguez (Ibague Tolima, Colombia) and Katherine Brown (Level Green, Pa.), whom were both out for medical reasons for the entire weekend.
