PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- Imagine the bright lights of performing on the big stage. You have always thought, "That could be me, entertaining the masses." Well the University of Maryland Eastern Shore is looking to give you that chance. The UMES Athletics Department is accepting applications for those that are interested in being Harry the Hawk, the school's official mascot.

Harry the Hawk is a non-competitive mascot program that serves as the face of UMES at athletic and institutional events. The chosen candidate will be considered a representative of UMES, and expected to make appearances at alumni, athletic and other institutional events as requested.

Harry is a regular at area community outreach events such as Relay for Life, UMES Cares Day, and local reading partnerships programs with elementary schools in Somerset and Wicomico counties.

Harry receives some of the gear that the varsity athletic teams receive, and even attends conference championships. Let it be known that Harry and the UMES Cheerleaders were the 2012 co-ed MEAC Champions during the conference basketball championships in March 2012.

To be considered, applicants must be at least 16 years old, complete an official Harry the Hawk Mascot application packet and submit the $10 application fee. An application packet can be obtained by visiting www.UMESHawks.com marketing and promotions page. The chosen candidate will receive a stipend and/or a scholarship as compensation for meeting the year-long requirements and expectations of being Harry the Hawk.

The athletics department is accepting applications until January 28, and will hold on-going interviews until the candidates are selected for an in-person interview in February. Further inquiries pertaining to the UMES mascot program, or questions about the tryout for Harry the Hawk should be addressed to Edward T. Jones II at etjones3@umes.edu.
