PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Six University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) students enrolled in the school's Professional Golf Management Program have been selected to complete in the 23rd annual PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship May 7-10 at the PGA Golf Club in Port Saint Lucie, Fla. Tyrone Killingsworth, Anthony Long, Donald McKinnon, Gregary Price, Richard Sheppard and Minsoo Soh will face 24 others in the men's individual division in a three-round, stroke-play format. The event will also include 23 other men's teams from all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA as well as seven women's squads. The three-day, 54-hole stroke play competition will be played at the PGA's Ryder Course, a 6,835-yard, par 72 layout. The groups will play 18 holes daily. Championships will be awarded in both the men's DI and DII, as well as in a women's division and in an independent competition. "As an organization we are honored to be part of the PGA National Minority Golf Championship," said new men's golf coach Jamila Johnson. "It has always been a tournament of champions, even from its humble beginnings in Cleveland, OH. This tournament encompasses teams from across the nation, regardless of collegiate conferences and prioritizes the true competitors, the course and anyone standing in the way of victory." The PGA Minority Golf Collegiate Championship originated in November 1986. The tournament's goal was to elevate the game of golf in minority colleges and universities by giving them a chance to compete in a championship because of being denied opportunities to compete in NCAA collegiate golf events. The first championship was conducted in the spring of 1987 at Highland Park Golf Course in Cleveland, Ohio before moving to its current home in 1998.
The UMES men's golf team made up of several PGM Program students will begin play under the guidance of Coach Johnson in a non-traditional season in the fall of 2009 before the team competes in the traditional season during the spring of 2010.
