MEN'S TENNIS DROPS SEASON OPENER TO HAMPTON

HAMPTON, Va. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men’s tennis team opened up its 2012-13 season on Sunday and the Hawks were defeated by Hampton University, 5-0. The Hawks were swept in singles play, before they lost both matches in the doubles portion. The match was the first collegiate event coached by Head Coach Benjamin Woods, who accepted the position as men's and women's tennis coach last fall.
Junior Wirlen Elame (Silver Spring, Md.) played his first collegiate match at No. 1 singles, but was defeated by Hampton’s Alvin Fludd 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Wayne Heath (Pungoteague, Va.) was blanked at No. 2, before junior Kijontray McClay (San Diego, Calif.) made his tennis debut with a loss at third-singles. Sophomore Christopher Charles (Brooklyn, N.Y.) concluded singles play with the Hawks’ fourth loss of the day at No. 4 singles.
In the doubles portion, Elame and Heath teamed up at first-doubles and fell 8-0. The result was the same for McClay and Charles in No. 2 doubles.
The men will return to Princess Anne for their home opener this Saturday, Feb. 2, when they square off with St. Francis (N.Y.) at 3 p.m. The women’s tennis team is also scheduled to face St. Francis one hour earlier at 2 p.m. on Satuday.
