March 2, 2008 SALISBURY, Md. - The University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Men's Tennis Team traveled 15 minutes north to Salisbury University to play the host Sea Gulls and a neutral site match against St. Mary's (Md.) College (3-4) in a men's tennis doubleheader at the SU outdoor courts. Salisbury (3-0) swept UMES 9-0 while the Seahawks topped the Hawks 8-1. In the final match of the day UMES #1 player Rashad James picked up the first win for the Fighting Hawks on the season, topping St. Mary's (Md.) #1 player, Jeremy Butanis 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. Dorian Thomas played a solid singles match at the #2 singles. He fell to the Seahawks Jeff Levy 6-3, 6-3. Every Fighting Hawk scored a point with Harold Fowler falling at #3 singles 6-3, 6-1 to Sam Barton, William Ntirenganya falling at #4 singles to Andrew MacLaughlin 6-0, 6-1 and Michael Davenport fell at #5 singles to Alex Djinis 6-0, 6-1. In doubles action Butanis and MacLaughlin topped Fowler and Thomas 8-1 while Djinis and Travis Horrom topped James and Ntrenganya 8-2. In the first match of the day, Salisbury won 9-0 over an undermanned UMES team. The team only played two doubles matches and five singles matches as the Hawks didn't have enough players due to injuries. David Lupinetti won 6-1, 6-3 over James at No. 1 singles. Andrew Nottage, and Giorgio Athans posted 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 2 and No. 4 singles. Matt Copleand took the 6-1, 6-0 win over Davenport while Marcus Robinson, a transfer from UMES, topped his old teammate, Fowler 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
In doubles action, Nottage and Robinson made their No. 1 doubles debut with an 8-2 win over Thomas and James. Athans and Lupinetti won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles over Fowler and Ntirenganya. As in the St. Mary's (Md.) match, the Hawks had to forfeit at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.
The UMES men return to the court and the women start their season on Wednesday, March 5 when both teams travel to York, Pa. to face York College (Pa.) in a non-conference match. |
