Richmond, Va. - The Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) played one of their best matches of the season on March 3, 2006 when they traveled to Richmond, Va. to take on Division II power Virginia Union University. UMES played a tough match before falling 4-3. Kishan Sudusinghe picked up his first singles win of the year with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over VUU's B. Sellers. Christopher Clarke was on the board as well, topping A. Davis 6-3, 6-4 to also pick up his first solo win. Harold Fowler kept it going, giving the Hawks wins at the number one, two and three singles spots. Fowler knocked off T. Goodman 6-4, 6-3. Virginia Union didn't quit. They picked up wins at the four, five and six spots. W. Motley topped Andrew Graham in a hard fought match, 7-5, 6-4. A. Smith defeated William Ntirerigamya 6-2, 6-3 and G. Johnson picked up a win by default. The match came down to the doubles contests. Clarke and Sudusinghe fell to Davis and Seller 8-6 and Graham and Fowler were topped by Goodman and Motley 8-5. The Hawks came within a few points on several matches of picking up their first win of the season.
