HAWKS EARN FIRST MEAC VICTORY, DEFEAT COPPIN STATE 5-2

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- UMES defeated Coppin State 5-2 on Monday to get its first conference victory in the 2011 campaign, getting four points in singles play to earn the win. The Hawks improve to 2-7 on the season and 1-2 in the MEAC.
The team was off to a tough start after falling in the first two singles matches, however the Hawks recovered to win the last four plus the doubles point.
Richard Warren (Salem, N.J.) served a shutout victory in the fourth position against Justin Hodge 6-0, 6-0, as did Malcolm Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.) in the fifth spot, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Casey Pleasants.
Dorian Thomas (Mitchellville, Md.) won 12 out of 13 games to defeat Jahra Wigfall 6-0, 6-1 in the third position. The Hawks earned the final singles point in default.
After the first two doubles matches were split due to default, the team of Warren and MarQuet Robinson (Cambridge, Md.) defeated Coppin State's Pleasants and Richard Graham 8-0 to take the point.
UMES will host Virginia State on Sunday to finish a three-match homestand in Princess Anne.
