PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - In his second year at the helm, Head Coach Dylan Vickers has been working to turnaround the men's and women's tennis program at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). The Salisbury University graduate is well on his way. Both the men and women`s teams defeated Wesley College Wednesday afternoon at the Hawks Outdoor Tennis Complex.

Rashad James (Charlotte, N.C.) helped lead the men to a 4-3 victory. The junior won his single competition in three sets (3-6, 6-1, 6-3) and then joined newcomer Osvaldo Rivera in doubles play, where the twosome secured the Hawks win after defeating Wesley 8-2.

This marks Vickers first collegiate men's win of his career, breaking a 22-game losing streak for the Hawks who improve to 1-6 on the season.

Emmash Sudusinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka) and Dorian Thomas (Bowie, Md.) also pulled in points for UMES. Sudusinghe won his game in just two sets (6-4, 6-0) and Thomas came back from a disappointing second set loss to take his win, 6-2, 5-7, 6-4.

Aissatou Ba (Dakar, Senegal) and Solana McMillan (Teaneck, N.J.) helped pace the Lady Hawks to a 5-2 win over Wesley. The two, with LaToya Coltrane (Temple Hills, Md.) and Latoya Jones-Stewart (Landover, Md.), won their singles competitions. McMillan took down her opponent in an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win.

UMES (1-7) was up 3-2 when Jones-Stewart defeated Julia Wright 6-1, 6-1 to secure the Lady Hawks first win of the season.

Both men's and women's teams face Coppin State next at home on March 26. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
