UMES UNABLE TO SINK PIRATES IN MEAC LOSS

HAMPTON, Va. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men’s team fell by a decision of 5-0 to Hampton University on Saturday, April 6 at the Neilson-Screen Tennis Center. The squad was swept in singles and doubles play in the match, as UMES posted its ninth consecutive loss to begin the year. It was the final MEAC match for the Hawks before the MEAC Tournament.
UMES (0-9) fell in both portions of the match to Hampton. Junior Wirlen Elame (Silver Spring, Md.) opened with a 6-0, 6-0 loss at No. 1, before the Hawks took home two points at No. 2 and No. 3. Junior Kijontray McClay (San Diego, Calif.) lost 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and junior Joseph Journey (Detroit, Mich.) fell by the same score. UMES withdrew in fourth singles.
The teams played just one double match as Elame and McClay were defeated 8-0. The other two matches in the doubles portion were not played.
The Hawks will resume action at the MEAC Championships in Raleigh, N.C., on Friday, April 19. The tournament will last three days until April 21.
