HAWKS OUSTED FROM MEAC TOURNAMENT WITH LOSS TO BULLDOGS
April 13, 2012
RALEIGH, N.C. - The fourth-seeded University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's tennis team saw its 2011-12 season end on Friday afternoon, as the Hawks were swept by the Bulldogs of South Carolina State, 4-0, in the first round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.
UMES (0-17) was led by the performance of sophomore Malcolm Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.), who was the lone Hawk performer to win a game. South Carolina State, the No. 1 seed from the South, used a balanced performance from its top six singles players to walk away with the advantage in singles. The Bulldogs won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, before posting a 6-0, 4-0 win at third singles.
Sophomore Wayne Heath played well at No. 4, but was dropped by a decision of 6-0, 3-0. The Bulldogs blanked the Hawks at fifth singles and won the No. 6 spot by forfeit. The UMES doubles teams were unable to win a game in any of their three matches.
Although the Hawks concluded their season without a win, they have much to look forward to next year. The entire squad is eligible to return, including Johnson, who was the top performer for the men's team.
