HAWKS KICK OFF SCHOOL YEAR WITH OUTRAGEOUS OLYMPICS
Aug. 30, 2010
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Department of Athletics welcomed back their student-athletes on August 26 with their annual Hawk Olympic Games at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.
Keith Davidson, Director of Athletics, started the day in Olympic style by running a lap with a torch and eventually lighting the larger Olympic flame.
The event is run by Outrageous Olympics, a company out of Richmond, Va. that runs Olympic-style team building activities. Student-athletes and athletic personnel are allowed the rare opportunity to bond amongst teams off of the court or field.
Student-athletes from all of the 15 UMES varsity sports, in addition to the cheerleading team, were divided into six teams.
Teams participated in 10 wacky events, such as the Cowboy Shuffle, Soap Box Derby and Flipper Flash. The day ended with teams facing off in the Tug of War.
The three top teams on the day were recognized for their efforts with gold, silver and bronze medals. The orange team, with members from baseball, women's bowling, softball and volleyball walked away as gold medal winners in the 2010 UMES Hawks Outrageous Olympics.
