Sept. 29, 2009 SALISBURY, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletics Department participated in and raised money for the Wicomico County Relay for Life at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Friday.
Organized by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), staff members, student-athletes, friends and family members showed up and walked in honor of bowling head coach Sharon Brummell, who is a breast cancer survivor, and others who have been affected by cancer.
"I was extremely honored by the turnout," exclaimed Brummell. "It was very emotional and I am proud of our student-athletes for their support of this event."
SAAC set a goal to raise $500 with the participation of all the Hawk teams and exceeded this goal by over $100. Baseball and bowling brought in the most donations with $120 and $105, respectively.
The event was kicked off early Friday evening with a moment of silence for those who lost their battles with cancer and then a lap around the baseball track by survivors. After that, every half hour was marked by a certain theme. The overall theme of the evening was games and the various campsites had themes ranging from Candyland and Monopoly to Operation and Scrabble.
About 20 members of the group braved the cold and stayed overnight in UMES tents located in left field.
The Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's signature event. It offers everyone in the community an opportunity to partake in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. The relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length.
Overall, the event has brought together more than 3.5 million people to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer. The strength of survivors inspires others to continue the fight and allows everyone to remember loved ones who have been lost to the disease.
