Surina R. Dixon is entering into her fourth season as head coach for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore's Lady Hawks basketball team.

While here at UMES, Coach Dixon has been committed to making sure her student-athletes are successful both on and off the court. The Lady Hawks basketball team maintained a cumulative gradepoint average of 3.0 or higher last year. In an effort to continue promoting academic and athletic excellence, Coach Dixon has set strict guidelines for study hall for all of her players. She also conducts various informational and professional development seminars to prepare her student-athletes for life outside of sports.

Prior to coming to UMES, Coach Dixon served as the head assistant coach at Arkansas State University, where she aided the Lady Indians to their best start in school history, and their first ever Top 25 national ranking. Coach Dixon also had an influential impact at Texas Southern University, where she was an assistant coach. During her brief stay, she helped guide TSU to their best finish in over a decade, both in the SWAC and overall.

Before entering into the realm of collegiate athletics, Coach Dixon was a successful coach for ten seasons in Memphis, TN at Germantown Middle School. Dixon won eight district and six county championships, and accomplished a run of five undefeated seasons, along with an overall record of 165-29 while coaching at Germantown.

While in transition from coaching middle school to college, Dixon had an opportunity to both play and coach two seasons of professional basketball with the WBA Memphis Blues. Dixon gained much recognition and experience coaching the Blues, however she gained ultimate respect while playing on the court. Dixon was known as a crafty and intelligent player with a shrewd understanding of the game. Her ability to see the court as well as her drive and determination, made her one of the best point guards in the league, as well as a natural leader amongst her teammates. She has also worked as a coach and instructor at numerous camps, including the 1998 WNBA Utah Starzz's free-agent camp, and the 2000 WNBA Houston Comets' training camp.

Success and education, athletics, and leadership are trademarks of Dixon. At Rosedale High School in Rosedale, Miss., Dixon captained both the basketball and track teams. Aside form her athletic accomplishments, Coach Dixon is proudest of her academic achievements. As a star player at Mississippi Valley State University, she graduated with honors, and then moved on to obtain her Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Mississippi.

Coach Dixon is a member of several professional and national organizations, such as the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, Black Coaches Association, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., National Educational Association, and Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities.

Surina is married to Harold Dixon, whom she met while coaching together at Germantown Middle School. Harold is currently working as a recruiter for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.
