ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The UMES women's basketball team outscored South Carolina State 41-27 in the second half and ended a four game losing streak when they took down the Lady Bulldogs 62-53 Monday night in Orangeburg. UMES (5-10, 2-2 MEAC), who was down five points at the half, outscored South Carolina State 15-6 in the first 10 minutes of the second period. A lay-up by Almalika Lemon (New York, N.Y./Frank Phillips College) at 10:22 spurred a 10-0 run by the maroon and gray and gave the Lady Hawks an 11-point lead, their largest of the night. Sophilia Hipps' layup with 37 seconds remaining put SCSU (3-11, 1-3 MEAC) within five points of the Hawks at 57-52, but UMES made 5-of-6 from the charity stripe in the final moments to seal the win. Senior Qiana Cheatham (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) hit four of the final free-throws for the Lady Hawks. UMES was led by Cheatham's 13 points. April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle H.S.) had 12 points and nine rebounds while Jelila Abdul-Bassit (Anchorage, Alaska/Monroe C.C.) added 12 points in 17 minutes off the bench. Hipps' 15 points paced South Carolina State. Rasheeda Jones added a double-double of 13 points and 11 boards while Brittany Baity chipped in with 14 points. The Lady Hawks next face Winston-Salem State for a non-conference dip on Saturday, January 13.
