NORFOLK, VA. The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks won their third contest in a row Monday night as they defeated Norfolk State (NSU) in a road decision, 68-56.

Senior Toni Kennedy (Baltimore, Md.) led all scorers with 23 points while regining MEAC Rookie of the Week Tiffany Reid (Philadelphia, Pa.) added a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Natalia Benton (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 points for UMES (5-7, 3-1 MEAC), while Brittany Adkins (Millsboro, Del.) pulled down a career high 10 rebounds.

Ashley Green had 12 points to lead NSU (2-10, 0-4 MEAC) while Jasmine Wilson added 10.

The victory is the Hawks' third in six days. UMES outrebounded the Lady Spartans 56-42 and held NSU to 29% field goal shooting.

UMES' largest lead in the first half was 10 points as Kennedy hit a jumper with six seconds left to give the maroon and gray a 36-26 advantage going into the break.

A pair of free-throws by sophomore Kristi Veltkamp (Hudsonville, Mich.) gave the Lady Hawks a 20 point advantage, their largest of the night, at 7:37 in the second half.

NSU then went on a 14-3 run and cut the lead to single digits as Ashley Bowman hit a jumper at 2:06 to shorten the Hawk advantage to nine.

But it would not be enough, as UMES went on to seal the win from the free-throw line. The Lady Hawks went 7-12 from the charity stripe in the final two minutes en route to a 12 point victory.

UMES, who are without the services of two starters due to injuries, will take on Delaware State in their next decision. The Lady Hawks face off with the Lady Hornets on Monday, January 16 in a nationally televised contest on ESPNU.
