Norfolk, VA - Octavia Thompson scored 20 points and Tiffany Winkfield 19 to lead the Maryland-Eastern Shore women's basketball team over Norfolk State, 72-63, on Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall.

The Lady Hawks (3-8, 1-4 MEAC), who earned their first MEAC victory, out-rebounded NSU 49-38 and outshot the Spartans 43 percent to 31.

UMES went on a 17-4 run late in the first half to change its 19-18 deficit into a 35-23 lead just before halftime. NSU's Shenae Johnson hit a 3-pointer to cut the Lady Hawks' lead to 35-26 going into the intermission.

The Lady Hawks slowly pulled way in the second half. They went on a 10-0 run to double their 10-point lead and take a 60-40 advantage with 10:13 left. Four different UMES players scored in the run.

UMES would still lead 64-42 before the Spartans went on a 16-0 run, sparked by six points by Yomika Corbitt (Tampa, Fla./Southwestern CC), to draw within 64-58 with 2:39 left.

But with NSU forced to foul, UMES made six free throws down the stretch to hold on.

Erica Bennett added nine points for UMES.

Corbitt had 13 points and nine rebounds, both team highs, for NSU. Ashley Bowman had 11 points and four steals off the bench, Johnson and Xena Harris had nine points apiece, and Dekisha Thompson added seven steals.

NSU, which has lost seven straight, fell to 1-13, 0-6 in the MEAC, and now occupies last place in the conference by itself. The Lady Hawks are back in action Monday in another MEAC contest against Hampton, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
