WASHINGTON – After a strong first half, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s basketball team was unable to sustain the momentum as they fell to the Lady Bison of Howard University in overtime, 77-75. With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 3-12 overall (0-4 MEAC) whereas Howard improves to 7-10 (3-1 MEAC) on the season. These two institutions will meet next month (02/15) inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. Game-time is set for 2:00 p.m. (EST)

In overtime, neither team was able to find rhythm as both teams combined for 2-of 14 from the floor. Howard took the lead after two freebies by Te’Shya Heslip, 75-73, with exactly 3:03 to go in overtime. As time was running out, UMES tied the contest, 75-75, with a layup from Breonna Evans (Melfa, Va.) and only 11 seconds in the extra period. The Lady Bison held for the final shot and Heslip delivered with a game-winner with only six ticks to go, giving Howard the victory, 77-75.

Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) paced the Hawk attack, scoring a game-high 21 points, including 9-for-11 from the free-throw line. Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.) recorded a double-double off the bench, 14 points and 14 boards, in the loss.

After taking a 43-29 lead at the half, back-to-back buckets from Long extended UMES’ lead, 47-29, until a basket by Victoria Gonzalez put the Lady Bison on the board, 47-31. With nearly four minutes played into the second half, the Lady Hawks found themselves with a 21-point lead, 56-35. UMES held a double-digit lead until the Lady Bison narrowed the gap to seven points, 65-58, with over five minutes in regulation. Howard continued to chip away the Lady Hawks’ lead and forced overtime after a layup from Cabria Johnson with only two ticks left, 73-73.

Other notable Hawk performances included Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) notching 10 points, including three long balls, while Chalyse Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) added eight points in a losing effort.

In the first four minutes, Howard led, 8-5, until a mini-run from the Lady Hawks tied the score, 12-12, with more than 12 minutes before halftime. In the next four-and-a-half minutes, UMES went on a 13-3 run to take a commanding 25-15 lead. The Lady Bison stormed back to go on a 10-3 run and pulled the game within three points, 28-25, with only four minutes in the half. The Lady Hawks responded and ended the half on a 15-4 run to take a 14-point lead into halftime, 43-29.

For Howard, Shavonne Duckett tallied a double-double, 19 points and 13 rebounds, whereas Heslip registered 18 points, nine boards, and eight assists in the victory.

Next Saturday (01/25), the Lady Hawks head south to Daytona Beach, Fla. where the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University awaits. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (EST)
