Jan. 19, 2004 Hampton, VA - Brendy Ellis' baseline jumper with four seconds to play gave the Hampton University Lady Pirates a 60-59 victory over visiting Maryland-Eastern Shore in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contest on Monday night. Ellis' shot capped a remarkable comeback by the Lady Pirates (4-10, 4-2 MEAC) who trailed by 11 points with 10 minutes to play thanks to the inside play of Lady Hawks center Tiffany Winkfield. Scoring 16 of her game-high 24 points (14 rebounds) in the second half, Winkfield appeared to be on her way to leading UMES to an upset of the defending champion Lady Pirates. However, the Lady Pirates held UMES scoreless over the next seven minutes on their way to an 11-0 run that knotted the game at 51 on a layup by Nicole Brathwaite with 3:42 remaining. The lead changed hands five times in the final 2:18 and the Lady Hawks went ahead for the final time at 59-58 on a layup by Winkfield with 29 seconds on the clock. But Ellis took the inbound pass from Lynetta Sullivan and nailed the game-winner. Following Ellis' basket, Erica Bennett of UMES (3-9, 1-5 MEAC) missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 1.2 seconds to play to end the game. Winkfield recorded her second consecutive double double and eighth of the season. In addition to Winfield's standout effort, the Lady Hawks also got solid performances from Erica Bennett who finished with 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting, and Laconia Hatcher who shot a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe on her way to 10 points. UMES next takes on the Lady Eagles of Coppin State College on January 24 at 2:00 pm in Princess Anne, MD. That game is also Take A Kid to the Game Day where all kids are free with a paying adult.
