TALLAHASSEE, FL The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks dropped a 65-53 conference decision to the Florida A&M (FAMU) Lady Rattlers Saturday afternoon.

Saturday's win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Lady Rattlers (7-9, 3-4 in MEAC), while the visiting Lady Hawks (5-9, 3-3) fell to .500 in conference play.

The two schools played dead even in the first half, as FAMU rallied from an early 9-1 deficit, to take a 12-10 lead, only to see UMES surge ahead 28-16 with 5:24 left.

However, Jackson and Q'Vaunda Curry combined to lead FAMU back in the final moments of the first half, together scoring all the Lady Rattler points in a 12-0 run to force a 28-28 count at intermission.

Florida A&M outscored UMES, 37-25 in the second half, as the Lady Rattlers opened the period with an 11-0 run in the first five minutes to bolt out to a 39-28 lead.

A Deidra Jones layup with 10:50 left pushed FAMU's lead to 17 points, 48-31 and the Lady Hawks managed to get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

UMES got a game-high 24 points from Toni Kennedy, along with eight points from Kristi Velkamp, seven points from DeVaughn Hailey plus six points and 11 rebounds from Daynese Stowe.

Joslyne Jackson scored 20 points to lead the Lady Rattlers, while Jones added 14. Curry rounded out the scoring effort for FAMU as chipped in with 12.

The Lady Hawks will head to Daytona Beach, FL, for a contest against Bethune-Cookman on Monday, January 23.
