FARMVILLE, Va. - Freshman Adobi Agbasi (Columbus, Ga.) grabbed an offensive board and hit the game winning shot with one second on the clock to put the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team over Longwood University 57-55. The Lady Hawks (6-9) hit 90-percent of their free throws in the win with four players seeing double-digits in points.

April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) had game-highs of 17 points and three steals. Tiffany Reid (Philadelphia, Pa.) finished with 14 points and Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) and Agbasi each had a team-high eight rebounds with 11 and 10 points respectively.

UMES was silent offensively for over four minutes in the first half, when Agbasi hit a jumper in the paint with 13:30 on the clock. She then blocked the shot of the Lancers leading scorer Becky Fernandes, and sunk two more baskets, as the Lady Hawks held Longwood scoreless for three minutes.

UMES took the lead for the first time in the game on a three point play completed by McBride at the free throw line. Longwood (5-12) regained the lead on a 3-point shot by Krystal Garrison with 11:17 left in the half.

The teams would trade baskets back and forth, tying twice, before UMES finally went back on top after Reid hit two free throws to make the score 21-20 with 3:15 on the clock. Back to back three's by Reid and Morton put the Lady Hawks up 27-20 with 1:51 left in the half. Longwood hit a layup before the break to drop close the deficit to five.

Reid, Morton and McBride would each score in a UMES 9-2 run to start the second half. The Lancers would battle back to within two points on a long three by Fernandes with 10:11 on the clock and UMES would not find the basket for over eight minutes as the Lancers mounted a 14-0 attack to go ahead 48-42.

Fighting back, UMES hit a huge three with just over three and a half minutes to play, pulling to within one point. McBride grabbed a defensive rebound, dribbled the length of the court through the defense and hit a layup to put the Lady Hawks up by one.

Fernandes made the second of two free throws at 2:45 to tie the game up for the fifth time at 51 all. The Lady Hawks pulled ahead 55-51 after McBride made a jumper in the paint and Morton hit two free throws with 1:00 on the clock. Sent to the line in double bonus with 45 seconds left in regulation, Fernandes sunk both free throws to put the Lancers within two, 55-53.

Longwood called their final timeout with 22 seconds on the clock for one play and got it as Garrison hit a layup to tie the game at 55-55 with 17 seconds to go.

Morton dribbled up the court and passed to McBride at the top of the key. She dribbled down the right side and threw up a shot with five seconds remaining. But it bounced out to the weak side where Agbasi grabbed it and banked in the shot with one second on the clock that put UMES up 57-55 for the win.

Two Lancers hit double-digits. Garrison and Fernandes led Longwood with 11 points each. The latter also had a team-high eight rebounds.
