PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Lady Hawks ended a two-game losing streak with a victory over Morgan State University, 65-51. Led by freshman Kristi Veltkamp's (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Home School) 18 points, which ties a career-high mark, UMES survived as they converted 20-of-30 shots from the free throw line, 16 in the second half alone. The Lady Hawks (4-10, 4-3), who dropped their previous two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference games to finish a long six-game road trip, had a tough time in the first half finding their game on the home floor as they shot 38% from the field and made 14 turnovers. However, with the return of senior guard Erica Bennett (Panama City, Fla./Jacksonville C.C.) to the lineup, the maroon and gray were able pressure the Lady Bears (2-12, 1-6) offense into costly mistakes. The Lady Bears committed 13 turnovers in each of the two halves and shot only 37% from the field. UMES struggled to take control of the game in the first ten minutes of the game as they trailed 12-10 with 10:17 remaining in the half, but a 10-2 run by the Hawks over the next six minutes gave UMES a 20-14 lead which they extended to 29-19 by halftime. In the second half, the Lady Bears held strong as they cut the Lady Hawks lead to just one point at 41-40 with just over 12 minutes remaining. However, UMES earned some breathing room with a quick 11-2 run over the next three minutes to take a 52-42 lead highlighted by junior Toni Kennedy's (Baltimore, Md./Grayson County College) first three-pointer of the evening. With just over five minutes remaining in the game the Lady Hawks lead shrunk once again as back-to-back three pointers by the Lady Bears cut the lead down to four points at 52-48.
UMES was able to secure the game from the free-throw line as it spent the last three minutes in the double-bonus. The Lady Hawks extended their lead back to double-figures at 64-51, as sophomore Qiana Cheatham (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) guided a 12-2 run by converting four straight free throws to end the game. Ashley Chase (Baltimore, Md./Paul Lawrence Dunbar) also finished the game in double-figures for UMES with 13 points to go with four rebounds, three steals, and two assists. The Lady Hawks will return to action this Wednesday, January 26th as they will host Coppin State. The game, which was postponed on Saturday, January 22nd due to wintry conditions will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and be followed by the men's game at approximately 7:30 p.m. in the William P. Hytche Center. |
