DAYTONA BEACH, FL The UMES Lady Hawks ended their two game losing skid Monday night as they defeated the Bethune-Cookman (BCC) Wildcats 67-60 in a conference decision at Moore Gymnasium. With the win, UMES improves to 6-9 (4-3 MEAC) while Bethune-Cookman falls to 3-12 (2-6 MEAC). Toni Kennedy had a team high 16 points in the victory while Kristi Veltkamp added 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field. Freshman DeVaughn Hailey chipped in with 12 points off the bench. Katie Clark had a game high 17 to lead BCC while Tristan McCray added 15. Kenturah Newkirk and Shannee Green chipped in with 10 each. The Lady Hawks outscored the Lady Wildcats 34-10 in the paint and had 18 second chance points compared to just five by BCC. UMES also scored 19 bench points to Bethune-Cookman's four. The maroon and gray took their largest lead of the game at 7:06 in the first half, when Kennedy hit a jumper to give the Lady Hawks a 14 point advantage. But BCC got the lead down to single digits, and a jumper by Kyla Morton closed the Lady Wildcats to within seven at the break, 33-26. Bethune-Cookman tied the game three times in the second period, the last coming at 9:24 thanks to Green's jumper. From there UMES went on an 18-4 run, and a Veltkamp lay-up at 1:13 gave the Lady Hawks a 14 point lead, matching their largest of the night. The Lady Wildcats took a quick 7-0 run in the last minute of play but it would not be enough as UMES walked away with the 67-60 road victory. The Lady Hawks are off until Saturday, January 28, next facing Morgan State in a road decision at 2 p.m.
