UMES FALLS BY ONE POINT IN HEARTBREAKER TO BETHUNE-COOKMAN

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - UMES had possession with 13 seconds left and down by one, but after a missed Jessica Long layup and Shanyce Stewart turnover, the Lady Hawks fell just short 55-54 to Bethune-Cookman on Monday. UMES falls to 5-11 and 1-4 in-conference while BCU goes to 9-10 and 4-3 in the MEAC.
Terrenisha Hollis scored two baskets in a game-starting 7-0 run for Bethune-Cookman. The Lady Wildcats led 9-2 after the first 2:50.
After two minutes of no scoring, Sha-Kiyla Finney (Portsmouth, Va.) started a run for UMES with a three-point make. Then Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) added a layup followed by another layup and one. A Karona Roach (Bear, Del.) free throw completed a 9-0 UMES run for an 11-9 Lady Hawks lead.
BCU countered with seven straight points to take a 16-11 lead. UMES used the free throw line to keep close, getting to within three after a Kelly basket 25-22 with 1:35 in the half. But two late baskets by BCU to close out the half gave the home team a 30-22 advantage.
Out of the locker room, UMES attacked the paint with consecutive baskets from Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) and Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.) to pull within four. After a Kiki Devane free throw, a Long (Fort Washington, Md.) fastbreak layup got UMES to within a possession 31-28 in the first three minutes of the second half.
The UMES defense remained strong, keeping BCU down early in the half. At 37-32 BCU, consecutive threes by Shawnee Sweeney (Colonial Heights, Va.) and Chalyse Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) gave UMES the lead 38-37. After a few free throws, a Taylor three and a Roach basket built the Lady Hawks' lead to nine 48-39 at the 6:06 mark, finishing a 16-2 run.
BCU earned the next four points, but another Sweeney three put the lead back to seven for UMES 51-44 with under five minutes to play. A BCU 6-1 run put the Lady Wildcats within two.
With 1:55 to play, Roach hit a jumper to get UMES back up by two scores 54-50.
The next two possessions, Hollis earned a pair of free throws then a fastbreak layup in succession to tie the game at 54 with 1:20 left. Taylor Houston then forced a steal then got fouled, making a free throw to push the home team up 55-54.
UMES lost the ball on the next possession but got it back on a Claybrooks rebound after a missed Chastity Rene Taylor shot. Long missed a layup the other way, and Stewart (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) got called for a charge on an in-bounds pass with 1.3 seconds left. The Lady Hawks could not get possession again and fell 55-54 to Bethune-Cookman.
Roach led the Lady Hawks with 14 points, adding six rebounds. Kelly earned a career-high nine points, while Finney had a team-best nine rebounds and five assists, adding three points.
For BCU, Hollis concluded with a double double with 11 points and rebounds. Chastity Rene Taylor had 10 points and three assists, while Jasmine Evans got 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
UMES will head back home, taking on North Carolina A&T at the Hytche Athletic Center on Saturday, February 2nd at 2 p.m.
