PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Lady Hawks defeated the South Carolina State (SCSU) Lady Bulldogs, 63-53, to win their second game in a row. Led by three players in double figures, UMES forced 31 turnovers and held the Lady Bulldogs to 37% shooting from the field. The Lady Hawks held the lead for the duration of the first half, taking an early 6-3 lead at 16:55. A pair of baskets by Evena Morency gave SCSU (7-11, 2-7 MEAC) their first lead of the night, a slim one point advantage over UMES (7-11, 6-4 MEAC). Monica Adams hit a lay-up at 13:18, giving the Lady Bulldogs their largest lead of the night at five points. Two consecutive turnovers by SCSU allowed the Lady Hawks to get back in the game, and freshman Brittany Adkins (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Technical H.S.) hit a jumper to tie it up at 15 with just under nine minutes remaining in the half. The teams traded baskets over the next couple of possessions, but a three pointer by Qiana Cheatham (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) at 6:42 gave the advantage back to UMES, taking a 20-17 lead over the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Hawks held on to the lead for the remainder of the period, as a pair of free-throws by junior Toni Kennedy (Baltimore, Md./Grayson County College) gave UMES a three-point advantage going into the half. Jamila Griffith (Barbados, West Indies/Tallahassee C.C.) led all scorers with 10 points, while Morency scored eight to lead SCSU. The Lady Bulldogs hit two early baskets to start the second half, taking the lead from UMES at 18:08. A trey by sophomore Ashley Chase (Baltimore, Md./Dunbar H.S.) turned the tide back in the favor of the Lady Hawks, and UMES stormed off on a 9-1 run over the next six minutes.
A pair of free-throws by Marquita Fenn cut the Lady Hawk lead down to four at 6:33, but UMES pushed their advantage back to double digits with just under a minute left in the game. The Lady Hawks hit seven of eight free-throw attempts in the last minute of play to seal the victory for UMES, giving them their third win in their last four games. Chase paced three players in double figures for the Lady Hawks, scoring a game high 16 points to go along with three steals and two assists. Griffith finished with her second double-double in as many games, tallying 14 points and 10 rebounds. Cheatham added 10 to round out the scoring for UMES. Diana Morency and Evena Morency led SCSU, scoring 14 and 12, respectively. The Lady Hawks play their next game on the road, facing off against American University in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, February 2 at 7:00pm. |
