Princess Anne, MD - Erica Bennett scored a career-high 24 points, while Tiffany Winkfield added 16 points and a career-high-matching 20 rebounds to lead the UMES Lady Hawks to an 80-73 non-conference victory over the American University Eagles at the Hytche Center Wednesday. The Lady Hawks (6-12, 2-8 MEAC) placed four players in double-figures and out-rebounded American (10-10, 5-2 Patriot) 47-29 in a game they dominated for most of the contest. UMES led 40-32 at halftime and built a lead as large as 19 in the second half before holding on for the seven-point win. Bennett shot 9-15 from the field and 5-6 from the foul line en route to besting her previous career-high of 20 set last week at Savannah State. Winkfield, who returned to the starting line-up after coming off the bench for the first time all season Monday against Bethune-Cookman, shot 8-14 on field goals and had four assists in addition to the 20 boards, matching her career-best total set at Arkansas-Little Rock last season. The Eagles took their largest lead of the game at 25-19 on a three-pointer by Kaitlin Schuyler with 6:06 left in the first half. UMES then took command, going on a 21-4 run over the next four ½ minutes capped by a Bennett three-ball that put the Lady Hawks ahead 40-29 with 26 seconds left in the half. After UMES built the lead to 68-49 with 7:44 left, the Eagles turned up the intensity and closed to within five points by going on an 18-4 run in the next four minutes, bringing the score to 72-67 with 3:20 left. But Chanel Hunt missed two straight jumpers that would've brought American within three, and the Lady Hawks went 8-12 from the foul line down the stretch to secure the win. Hunt led American with 17 points on 6-11 shooting, while Chanel Spriggs added 15 and five rebounds.
The Lady Hawks return to MEAC play Saturday in Dover, DE with a re-match against the Delaware State Lady Hornets. The Hornets beat UMES 52-50 in a thriller on January 3rd at the Hytche Center. The game tips off at 2:00 p.m. from Alumni Gym.
