Washington, DC - Daisha Hicks scored a game-high 17 points and Brittany James added 15 as Howard University rolled to an easy, 67-41 win over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference women's game at Burr Gymnasium. The loss moved the Lady Hawks back to .500 in conference play as they hold an 8-13 overall record and drop to 6-6 in MEAC play. The Lady Bison (11-9 overall, 6-5 in the MEAC) snapped a two-game losing streak and move slightly ahead of UMES in the conference standings.

Howard jumped out to an early lead and went into the locker room with a comfortable 33-12 advantage at the half. Most of the team's success came as result of UMES turnovers (30 for the game) that were converted into 26 points.

UMES struggled to find open looks at the basket and as a result shot only 22 percent (12 of 54) from the floor, while Howard was able to get plenty of good looks from Hicks, who shot 6 of 11 from the field and James, who hit on 6 of 13.

Despite all this, the Lady Hawks were able to get within 8 at the 15:08 mark of the second half following an incredible 13-2 run to start the secodn half. But back-to-back baskets by Hicks and another by James increased the lead to 41-27 and Howard never looked back.

UMES was led by Kristi Veltkamp and Toni Kennedy, who each scored 10 points. Veltkamp was also very strong on the defensive end recording a game-high seven rebounds and three block shots.

The Lady Hawks return home this weekend as they will play host to Florida A&M on Saturday, February 12, 2005. The game, which is scheduled to tip-off at 2:00 p.m., is Homecoming for UMES and will be followed by the men's game at 4:00 p.m.
