GREENSBORO, N.C. - Senior April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) notched her six double-double of the season with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds but North Carolina A&T's Lamona Smalley was three assists shy of a triple-double as The Lady Aggies topped the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team, 76-46, at the Corbett Sports Center Monday. Smalley tallied 18 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists to help N.C. A&T stay perfect in MEAC play at 10-0 and improve to 16-7 overall. T'Wuana Cook also had 22 points on 4-of-8 from 3-point range, five boards and four steals. UMES, which got 13 rebounds from junior Chena Parker (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), fell to 8-12 (5-5 MEAC) with the loss. NCAT jumped out to a 9-1 lead on a 3-point play by JaQuayla Berry at the 15:16 mark Cook then hit consecutive 3-pointers to grow the Lady Aggies lead to 20-7 at 8:45. After a pair of Jaleesa Sams, Cook knocked down her third three of the half to make it a 25-9 game. At 7:22. Down, 30-11, with just over six minutes left in half, UMES scored eight straight points to cut the margin 11 with 4:21 left. Amber Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) started the run with a layup off an assist by Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) and Parker and McBride hit back-to-back threes to pull within 30-19, the Lady Hawks' never got closer than that the rest of the day. NCAT led by a 37-24 margin at the half. A&T's Cook and McBride each had 14 to lead their teams while McBride and Parker had seven boards apiece for UMES. NCAT was 41.4 percent from the floor in the half with UMES shot just 27.6 percent. The Lady Aggies began the second half on a 16-6 run over the first five minutes to go up 53-30. The stretch was capped with a Berry trey. NCAT hit five from long range for over 35 percent on the day while UMES was just 2-of-11 from distance.
UMES was able to shave the lead to under 20 points just twice more. Parker and McBride had consecutive buckets to make the Aggies' advantage 19 at 53-34 with 14:05 to play and then Morton converted a layup at the 12:11 mark to make the score 55-36. A&T then put the game away, going on another prolonged run, this time 17-4 to lengthen the lead to 72-40 with 4:01 to play. Parker finished with eight points for UMES while Morton had four points, three boards, two assists and a team-high four steals. Each team tallied 45 rebounds, UMES had 18 offensive and NCAT had 32 on the defensive glass. The Aggies forced 26 turnovers while The Lady Hawks turned the hosts over 14 times. As a result, NCAT outscored UMES, 13-9, in second-chance points and 27-11 in points off turnovers UMES returns home Saturday (Feb. 13) to play Florida A&M at 2 p.m. |
