LADY HAWKS UNABLE TO CONTAIN COPPIN STATE

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s basketball team was unable to slow down a hot shooting Coppin State University (CSU) team as they lost, 80-64, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 5-15 overall (1-7 MEAC) while CSU improved to 11-11 (8-2 MEAC) on the season.
Sophomore forward Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.) registered her sixth career double-double, 12 points and 11 rebounds, to pace the Hawk attack whereas freshman guard Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) added 10 points in a losing effort.
In the first four minutes after halftime, CSU opened the second half on a 12-7 run, 52-36, to extend their halftime lead, 40-29. Over the next four minutes, the Lady Eagles’ momentum continued as they increased their lead to 21-points, 63-42, after a jumper by Amber Griffin. With over seven minutes in the contest, a three-pointer by Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) trimmed the deficit to thirteen, 70-57, but CSU responded by scoring eight unanswered points to inflate the lead back to 21 points, 78-57. In the final minutes, Maryland Eastern Shore outscored the Lady Eagles, 7-2, but would eventually fall, 80-64.
After back-to-back free-throws from Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.), UMES trailed by one, 12-11, with over six minutes played in the game. Within the next six minutes, the Lady Eagles took an eight-point lead, 27-19, until a three ball by Taylor Thompson (Chapel Hill, N.C.) narrowed the deficit to five, 27-22. Coppin State responded by outscoring Maryland Eastern Shore, 11-5, to take a commanding double-digit lead, 38-27, with nearly two-and-a-half left before intermission. The Lady Hawks fought back to cut Coppin State’s lead to single-digits, 38-29, until a layup from Omaah Tayong made the halftime score, 40-29.
The Lady Eagles shot nearly 53-percent, 36-for-68, from the floor, led by Kyra Coleman scoring a new career-high 30 points. Tayong notched a double-double, 12 points and 11 boards, in the win.
This Monday (02/10), the Lady Hawks travel down to Hampton, Va. where they will take on the Lady Pirates of Hampton University inside the HU Convocation Center. Game-time is set for 5:30 p.m. (EST)
