LADY HAWKS HANG TOUGH; FALLS TO HAMPTON

HAMPTON, Va. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s basketball team fell to Hampton University, 54-35, despite hanging tough with the conference elite team. With the setback, the Lady Hawks dropped to 5-16 overall (1-8 MEAC) while Hampton improved to 20-4 (11-0 MEAC) on the season.
Maryland Eastern Shore held the Lady Pirates to 25-percent shooting, 18-of-72 from the field. Junior Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) notched a team-high 15 points, including 4-for-7 from downtown, while freshman Mariah McCoy added eight points and three boards in the loss.
Sweeney nailed a three ball to open the second half, 32-20, but the Lady Pirates were in control as they went on an 11-2 run and held their biggest lead of the contest, 43-22, with less than 13 minutes in regulation. Within the next five minutes, UMES narrowed the deficit to fourteen, 45-31, but Hampton closed the game on a 9-4 run to win, 54-35.
Other notable Hawk performances included sophomore Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) grabbing a new career-high 13 boards whereas sophomore Ashleigh Claybrooks recorded 10 rebounds in a losing effort.
In the first half, UMES jumped out to an early lead, 5-3, after a long ball from Sweeney. The Lady Pirates responded by going on a 14-3 run to take the lead, 17-8, forcing UMES head coach Fred Batchelor to call a timeout. Maryland Eastern Shore could not find any offensive rhythm as they shot only 13-percent, 4-of-32, in the first half. Hampton took a fifteen-point halftime lead, 32-17.
For the Lady Pirates, Nicole Hamilton recorded a game-high 25 points while Brielle Ward pulled down 13 rebounds in the victory.
This Saturday (02/15), the Lady Hawks return home to host Howard University for UMES Homecoming. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. (EST) Two days later (02/17), Maryland Eastern Shore takes on Morgan State University inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. Game-time is set for 5:30 p.m. (EST)
