PRINCESS ANNE, MD - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore freshman Kristi Veltkamp (Lansing, Mich./Lansing Home School) once again led the Lady Hawks to a thrilling victory over the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers on Saturday, February 14 in the Hytche Center. Veltkamp, who scored a team-high 16 points in the Lady Hawks overtime victory in Tallahasse, FL back on January 8th, scored 14 points in the 60-54 Homecoming weekend victory.

In the first half, the Lady Hawks received a solid effort from the freshman center Veltkamp, as she scored 11 of UMES's first 13 points, which included her sixth three-pointer of the season in nine attempts. She also recorded three blocked shots and pulled down two rebounds giving the Hawks a slim two-point advantage.

The two teams played even for the final ten minutes as the Lady Hawks closed out the first half with a 26-23 lead. Veltkamp led all scorers with 13 points and three rebounds.

In the first two minutes of the second half, the Lady Hawks stumbled as FAMU went on a 7-0 run to claim its largest lead to that point at 30-26. However, sophomore Candyce Jeter (Baltimore, MD/Milford Mill Acadamy) ended the run and pulled the Lady Hawks to within one with a deep three-pointer, which was followed by a jumper by junior Jamila Griffith (Barbados, West Indies/Tallahassee CC) to reclaim the lead at 31-30 with 16:00 remaining.

The two teams exchanged leads four times over the next four minutes before back-to-back-to-back three pointers by junior Toni Kennedy (Baltimore, MD/Grayson County College) and two by sophomore Ashley Chase (Baltimore, MD/Dunbar HS) put the Lady Hawks up 42-34.

UMES extended its lead to 10 points at 50-40 with just over five minutes left, but a quick 11-0 spurt by the Lady Rattlers over a span of 2:14 gave FAMU the lead 51-50 with 1:55 left. Chase answered quickly with a running jumper in the lane to reclaim the lead for good as UMES shut the door defensively led by Veltkamp's fourth block shot of the game with 26 seconds remaining and the lead at just two points.

Kennedy secured the victory with a fast break lay-up in which a flagerant foul was called in addition to her made lay-up. Kenendy hit the two free-throw's and the Lady Hawks regained possession of the ball because of the flagerant foul call with a 55-51 lead.

Kennedy finished the game with a game-high 15 points, while Chase finished the game with 11 points, six rebounds, five assists, four steals. The win moved UMES into sixth place in the current MEAC standings and within a game and a half of third place in conference.

The Lady Hawks will be back in action on February 14, facing off against Bethune Cookman in a doubleheader also featuring the Fighting Hawks. Tip off at the Hytche Center is slated for 5:30pm.
