PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – On a day where the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) family comes together and returns home for Homecoming, the women’s basketball team made a statement win over the Lady Bison of Howard University, 66-57, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. As the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament looms, these two conference rivals are on a collision course and may meet in the first-round of the tournament.

With the victory, Maryland Eastern Shore improved to 6-16 overall (2-9 MEAC) while Howard dropped to 10-14 (6-5 MEAC) on the season.

After taking a commanding halftime lead, 35-20, the Lady Hawks came out sluggish, committing six turnovers and eight fouls in the first six minutes, allowing Howard to get back into the contest. The Lady Bison opened the second half on a 12-4 run, 39-32, with over 14 minutes in regulation. Within the next four minutes, UMES regained their composure and push the lead back to double-digits, 49-36, but Howard battled back by scoring six unanswered points, 49-42. As Howard made their runs, UMES constantly responded as they were able to hold off the Lady Bison to win, 66-57.

Junior guard Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) paced the Lady Hawks as she scored 19 points, including 10-14 from the charity stripe, while Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) led the UMES’ bench squad, posting 16 points and five boards in the win.

A layup from Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) gave UMES an early seven-point lead, 11-4, in the first half. With just over nine minutes left before halftime, a three-pointer by Sweeney extended the Lady Hawks’ lead to double-digits, 22-10. Maryland Eastern Shore increased their lead as they continued to put the pressure on the Lady Bison, forcing 12 first half turnovers. UMES held a 15-point halftime lead, 35-20, including a layup from Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) as time expired in the half.


 

 

For the Lady Hawks, Kelly scored eight points, including her 100th career point, while Udoji grabbed a game-high nine boards, including her 300th career rebound, in the victory.

For Howard, Shavonne Duckett recorded 14 points and four rebounds whereas Jasmine Hill and Te’Shya Heslip combined for 30 points in a losing effort.

This Monday (02/17), Maryland Eastern Shore takes on the Lady Bears of Morgan State University in their lone seasonal matchup of the season inside the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center. Tip-off is booked for 5:30 p.m. (EST)
