TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team battled back from a 15-point deficit and rallied in the second half to hold off the Florida A&M (FAMU) Lady Rattlers, 63-62 Saturday afternoon in a MEAC decision at Gaither Gymnasium. Down by nine points at the break, UMES made six of its first eight shots and opened the second half on a 17-2 run. A trey by senior Qiana Cheatham gave the Hawks a three point advantage at 16:13, its first lead since 11:51 in the first period. The lead changed hands over the next few possessions until Denise Tate's jumper gave FAMU a three-point lead at 9:54. A lay-up by Candyce Jeter spurred an 11-0 run by the maroon and gray over the next five minutes. UMES took a nine-point lead, its largest of the night, when Brittany Adkins connected on a lay-up at 2:43. Florida A&M whittled the lead down to a point behind the play of freshman Marke Freeman, who kept the Lady Rattlers in the game and scored seven of the final 10 points for FAMU, but the Lady Hawks held off the last minute Rattler run to claim the victory. McBride had a team-high 16 points to pace the Hawks. Cheatham added 14 points and finished 4-for-5 from three-point range. Kristi Veltkamp pulled down a game high 12 rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench. Freeman led all scorers with 20 points while Secrett Anderson added 12 for FAMU (12-13, 8-6 MEAC). UMES (11-14, 7-6 MEAC) shot 47% in the second half and connected on 5-of-9 from three-point range (56%) in the same period. The Hawks also outscored the Lady Rattlers 22-20 in the paint and held a 15-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
