PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Corin Adams hit a jumper with three seconds left to lift Morgan State over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), 62-60 in a homecoming women's basketball decision Saturday afternoon at the Hytche Center. The contest marked the final home contest for seniors Almalika Lemon, Natalia Benton, Candyce Jeter and Qiana Cheatham.

UMES (11-16, 7-8 MEAC) whittled an 11-point lead down to three in the final six minutes of play before a Cheatham trey with 18 seconds left tied the score at 60-60. Morgan State (14-11, 9-6 MEAC) then held the ball for the final possession before Adams sunk a 12-foot jumper in the paint to give the Lady Bears the two-point win.

The Hawks were down by as many as 13-points when Whitney Johnson's free-throws at 7:06 gave MSU a 26-13 advantage in the first half. UMES then outscored the Lady Bears 8-4 over the next three and a half minutes to cut the lead down to eight. The two squads hit a rut in the final five minutes after Danielle Cooper connected on a pair of free-throws, with both teams going scoreless in the final 4:47 of play. Morgan State held a 30-22 advantage the break.

MSU outscored the Hawks 30-24 in the paint but UMES had the advantage in bench points, outscoring Morgan State 27-12. The maroon and gray also outscored the Lady Bears 16-9 in second chance points and 14-6 in points off turnovers.

The Hawks got a double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds from freshman April McBride. Cheatham finished with 15 while Brittany Adkins had 12 points off the bench.

Shalane Price's 19 points paced MSU. Adams chipped in with 14 while Britney Griffin pulled down 10 rebounds.

 

 

UMES will look to rebound Monday when they travel to Baltimore for a conference match against Coppin State at 5:30 pm.
