HAMPTON SINKS LADY HAWKS

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s basketball team ran into the top team in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Hampton University, and lost to the final score, 90-62.
With the loss, Maryland Eastern Shore dropped to 7-18 overall (3-10 MEAC) while the Lady Pirates improved to 23-4 (14-0 MEAC) on the season.
Despite the setback, the Lady Hawks outrebounded Hampton, 61-47, led by Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.) posting her eighth double-double of the season, 11 points and 15 rebounds. Junior guard Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) had a team-high 19 points while grabbing five boards in the loss.
In the first four minutes after halftime, both teams came out of sluggish as they committed 12 fouls combined, but Hampton was able to increase their lead over the span, 56-25. Back-to-back freebies from Long trimmed the deficit, 66-38, with over 10 minutes in regulation. The Lady Hawks fought and clawed all game, but Hampton was too much as they knocked off Maryland Eastern Shore, 90-62.
Freshmen Briana Mack (Harrisburg, Pa.) and Briana Sye (Harrisburg, Pa.) each registered new career-highs. Mack scored eight points, including a perfect 3-of-3, from the floor while Sye added seven points in a losing effort.
A three-pointer by Long gave the Lady Hawks an early lead, 3-2, but the lead would be short-lived. The Lady Pirates clamped down on the defensive end as they outscored the Lady Hawks, 18-2, to take a commanding lead, 20-5, with less than 12 minutes before intermission. Over the next six minutes, Hampton continued to put the pressure on as they balloon the lead to twenty, 32-12. The Lady Pirates closed the half on an 11-3 run to lead, 43-15.
For Hampton, Malia Tate-DeFreitas notched a game-high 26 points while Alyssa Bennett recorded a double-double, 21points and 11 boards, in the victory.
Beginning this Saturday (03/01), the Lady Hawks hit the road for the next two contests as they travel to Baltimore to face Coppin State University in a re-match. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. (EST)
Two days later (03/03); UMES wraps-up their final road game of the season in Norfolk, Va. to square off against the Lady Spartans of Norfolk State University. Game-time is booked for 5:30 p.m. (EST)
