BALTIMORE, Md. - Shalamar Oakley and Rashida Suber combined for 43 points in the Coppin State women's basketball team's 68-51 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) on Monday at the Coppin Center.

The Eagles (21-6, 16-0 MEAC) won their 19th straight home game and their 15th straight overall. The Hawks fall to 11-17 and 7-9 in the MEAC.

April McBride led UMES in points and rebounds with 17 and eight respectively. Jelila Abdul-Bassit also scored double-digits, finishing with 12 points.

The Eagles scored first as Tanezia Harden stole the ball from Kristi Veltkamp and Suber converted the turnover into two-points. Suber then connected on one of two free throws to make the score 3-0 three minutes into the contest.

April McBride responded with a jumper and connected on a pair of free throws to give the Hawks their first lead at 15:53.

Shalamar Oakley hit back to back field goals and added a free throw to start a 19-0 run that gave Coppin State back the lead. The Eagles only allowed Md.-Eastern Shore to hit consecutive field goals after leading 32-17 with two minutes left in the half. CSU led 32-22 at intermission.

Coppin State once again scored the first three points of the half, while UMES scored the following four. Daniella Cooper's free throw at 16:59 capped the Hawks four-point run and trimmed the Eagle lead below 10 for the first time in 15 minutes of play.

CSU scored seven unanswered points to follow and led by at least 13 the remainder of the contest, extending its lead to 22 four times during the span.

Suber led CSU with 24 points, her 10th 20-plus point performance of the season, and also made four steals. Oakley followed with 19 points and led the team with three assists.

 

 

Whitney Cunningham reached double-digits in consecutive games for the first time in her career by shooting a career-high 6-for-7 from the floor for 12 points. Talia Sutton led the team in rebounds with 10.

UMES travels to Hampton on Wednesday for their only meeting with the Lady Pirates. The Eagles will look to win their 40th consecutive regular season conference game when they travel to face Florida A&M on Wednesday.
