Princess Anne, MD - Sherrie Tucker's double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds led Coppin St. past Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) Monday night at the Hytche Center. The Lady Hawks fell in their contest to the Lady Eagles, 65-60, as Coppin State swept the season series against UMES.

The loss drops the Lady Hawks to 13-12 (10-6 MEAC) and into a tie for third place in the conference standings while the Lady Eagles improve to 18-8 (17-0 MEAC).

"Coppin did what they needed to do to win," Head Coach Fred Batchelor said. "Holding on to third place (in the conference) is very important to us not only as a team, but as a program. We really have to focus to win our last two games."

Kristi Veltkamp's (Hudsonville, Mich.) 14 points led UMES while Toni Kennedy (Baltimore, Md.) finished with 12 points and eight assists. Tucker's 18 points and 10 boards led the way for Coppin State while Shalamar Oakley chipped in with 15 points. Talia Sutton grabbed a game high 12 rebounds for the Lady Eagles.

Coppin State held a 45-30 rebounding edge over UMES and also took 25 free-throw attempts compared to 12 by the Lady Hawks.

Tucker's jumper at 15:11 gave the Lady Eagles an eight point lead, their largest of the game. The Lady Hawks cut the advantage down to one point with just over three minutes left in the half, but Tamieka Noel's lay-up at 2:03 put Coppin up by five.

The Lady Eagles went into the break with a four point advantage, 30-26.

The lead bounced back and forth in the opening minutes of the second half as neither team went up by more than one point. A Veltkamp lay-up at 13:20 put UMES up by one point, but a Tucker jumper spurred a 13-4 run by Coppin and helped the Lady Eagles to another eight point lead, matching their largest advantage of the night.

The Lady Hawks will next take on South Carolina State on March 1 in a road decision at Orangeburg, South Carolina. Tip-off at Smith-Hammond-Middleton Memorial Center is slated for 5:30 pm.
